China Trip

Radio Caroline can be anywhere

For the past 12 months, we have been building a close association with Muzen Audio, a successful Chinese manufacturer of audio equipment, including high quality radios. This followed an initial approach by Muzen after they discovered the Caroline story which fascinated them. A special edition "Caroline Radio" was launched earlier this year and we have benefitted from a share of the sales revenue.

Muzen has its own on-line radio station in China which is named 'Radiooo Station'. Each week Radiooo Station broadcasts a two hour Radio Caroline Show presented by Richard Lavelle. The show is heard by several million people across China. You can hear it every Saturday morning 00:00 until 02:00 on our main channel.

Muzen does things in style and invited both Richard Lavelle and Steve Anthony to attend an event in entitled the '2nd Radio Renaissance' held in Dunhuang, China over the weekend of 18/19 August (the 1st Radio Renaissance was held last year in Morocco). This was a 24 hour marathon radio broadcast comprising eighteen radio presenters from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, USA and the Caroline team from the UK. The broadcast was listened to by an average of 3 million people throughout.

Steve and Richard presented two hours of Radio Caroline – The Best of British between the hours of 03:00 and 05:00, from a studio located right at the edge of the Gobi desert. The studio building was erected especially for the event and was modelled to represent a space ship – 'The Sound Voyager' – sending music across the universe. Listener reaction to the Caroline show on Chinese social media and on-line networking sites was incredible. Despite being the middle of the night it was obvious that thousands had stayed up to listen.

Caroline 'pirate' T-Shirts and wrist bands were taken to China by Steve and Richard and handed out to the other presenters. However, Muzen and Radiooo Station were so generous that our guys had to buy an additional suitcase each to bring back gifts that they were given. Not only that but two excursions were laid on; One to the Mogao Caves and the second was a trip out into the Gobi Desert where much sand, rock formations and a spectacular sunset were seen.

When our founder, Ronan O’Rahilly famously said "Radio Caroline can be anywhere" we really don't think he envisaged that the Station would one day be heard in The Peoples Republic of China! But, it is now and we are looking forward to an on-going relationship with Muzen and Radiooo Station. Who knows, maybe they will want to hold the 3rd Radio Renaissance, next year on a big red ship. We'll have to see!

We are very grateful to Muzen Audio for funding Richard and Steve's trip in its entirety.
